CrashLanding On You has a pretty simple—and rather goofy—premise. One day, a South Korean chaebol heiress named Yoon Se-ri (Son Ye-jin) randomly decides to go paragliding. A freak tornado happens, and she crash-lands in North Korea. Ri Jung-hyuk (Hyun Bin), a Captain in the North Korean army, discovers her.

Last Updated on 2020-03-01 , 726 pm If you’ve like me who has binge-watched the Korean drama Crash Landing On You in Netflix, you’d be reminded of another drama. In 2016, we were treated to Descendants of the Sun, a Korean drama that did more than just captivate an entire nation; It revolutionized the entire military industry. Image All of a sudden, military service was relevant. Men and women alike looked towards the military with newfound respect, and enlistees were suddenly striding into camp with an unprecedented bravado. And needless to say, captains everywhere began walking with their chest out and butt tensed, ala the Big Boss Captain Yoo. Why George Goh Might Not be Able to Run in the Presidential Election 2023 After All Truly, it was a revelation in itself. Not the butt tensing, just the whole affair, you know? We even reenacted a scene for a branded video Alas, the military craze has somewhat died down, what with the SongSong couple’s rather nasty split from each other and the dreariness that enlistment naturally presents. Notwithstanding the announcement of a DotS 2, it’s safe to say that military fever has reached an all-time low. Until now. Yes folks, I’m talking about the hottest Korean drama in town right now Crash Landing On You. Image Forbes But what makes Crash Landing On You so irresistibly appealing, as the legions of CLOY fans worldwide would attest to? And why exactly did Goody Feed refer to it as the Second DotS’, apart from the fact that it would make a real click-bait headline? Well, let’s find out. The Basic The Overused Plot First and foremost, let’s start with the basic of all basics the story line. Though no worries, there’s no spoilers here. Essentially a twist on the age-old Romeo and Juliet trope, Crash Landing On You tells the story of two star-crossed lovers, Yoon Se-ri played by Son Ye-jin, a South Korean heiress, and Ri Jeong-hyuk played by Hyun Bin, a member of the North Korean elite and captain in the army. Image AsiaOne Notwithstanding their vastly different cultural statures and positions, they meet under the unlikeliest of circumstances a forest in the DMZ in North Korea, where Se-ri had been blown off-course by a freak tornado while out for a short paragliding ride in Seoul. In other words, she crash landed on Jeong Hyuk. Jeong Hyuk, against his better judgement, would give Yoon Se-ri shelter as he develops plans to sneak her back to South Korea. However, the scriptwriter’s dreaded South Korean TV tropes swiftly strike, and the pair soon find themselves deeply in love despite their earlier and rather obvious enmity. As fate intervenes and deals multiple cards that would’ve made Cupid proud, the star-crossed lovers must overcome all odds to seek what they’ve been constantly looking for each other. According to Wikipedia, it was the fourth highest rated K-drama for the first part of its run. After its final episode on 16 Feb 2020, Crash Landing On You officially boasts a remarkable rating on MyDramaList, as well as a 5-star approval rating on Google. It also holds a spectacular rating on iMDb. The drama has also proven a real hit outside South Korea, with many A-List celebrities in Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines and Thailand confessing to “binge-watching the drama”. Locations Filmed Apart from South Korea, the drama was also filmed in Switzerland and Mongolia. Despite its premise, Crash Landing On You did not utilise North Korea as a filming location. All makeshift landscapes were re-created in places such as Jeju in Korea, amidst other locations. I mean, you do know that, right? These iconic steps didn’t mean that South Koreans could just step into North Korea for a drama Highest TvN rating in history According to Soompi, the series finale of the hit drama set a new record for the highest viewership ratings in tvN history, with an average nationwide rating of percent and a peak rating of percent. The previous record was set by Goblin back in January 2017, when its finale achieved a peak rating of percent. Image Crash Landing On You is now the second-highest rated drama in South Korean cable television history, with a peak AGB Nielsen rating of percent. Sky Castle, a drama about South Korean “tiger mums”, is in first place having achieved a peak rating of percent in February 2019. And lest you’re not aware, Sky Castle is also available in Netflix. According to Wikipedia, the production of the drama proved to be “painstakingly meticulous”, owing to the country’s tense relationship with North Korea. Because the crew lacked a ” guidebook on multiple hurdles he had to hop over — skillfully and delicately – to accurately depict the country while dodging criticism”, they had to be careful not to misrepresent the state. Apart from guidance by North Koreans residing in South Korea, as well as general research, the crew also worked with North Korean defector turned film advisor and writer Kwak Moon-wan, who joined the drama’s writing team. Kwak, who learnt film directing in Pyongyang and had been a member of an elite security force protecting the Kims, helped to craft the drama’s plot, and assisted in conceptualising the setting and scenes in the drama depicting everyday North Korea life. Image According to North Korean defector-turned-YouTuber and reality TV celebrity Kang Nara, around 60% of the portrayal of North Korea is accurate. “The richer families in North Korea like to show off their wealth by adding lace curtains to their windows. So that was pretty well portrayed,” she commented Wait, only 60%? I felt like I was in Kim Jong-Un’s land just by watching it. Inspiration As it turns out, the freak accident that left Yoon Se-ri stranded in North Korea might not have been a mere fictional gimmick. According to The Straits Times, Screenwriter Park Ji-Eun drew inspiration from actress Jung Yang’s 2008 accident the actress was sailing in Incheon when her boat was swept away due to harsh weather conditions, causing her to almost cross the 38th parallel… The border between North and South Korea. Also, here’s one real-life North Korean escape story that might spark similarities in comparison back in May 2019, a refined prisoner by the name of Kim struck up an unlikely friendship with her stoic prison guard, Jeon. They eventually fled the country when Kim was sentenced to four years, three months in the feared Chongori prison camp. Crash Landing On You might be a fictional love story done exceptionally well, but as far as reality’s concerned, something else might be brewing. Back in 2019, Hyun Bin and Son Ye Jin denied dating rumours not once, but twice. Having starred together in the Korean movie The Negotiation, rumours then surfaced that the two were travelling in the United States together. Their agencies, however, denied the rumour. Later on, photos of the two grocery shopping together with other acquaintances surfaced, which prompted the agencies to refute rumours once again. Just recently, dating rumours between the pair were renewed, after a sharp-eyed Netizen pointed out a BTS scene in which Son Ye Jin and Hyun Bin seemed to be holding hands underneath the table. Image Soompi However, Hyun Bin’s agency has stated that Ye Jin was, in fact, holding her own hand. Handzoned. Jking. On a serious note, it wouldn’t be a surprise if the pair did, indeed, get together. After all, one does not have to look further back than 2016 to find a startlingly similar case. Though, considering how the 2016 incident turned out… This could well turn out to be a blessing… or a curse. South Korean Doctor + South Korean Soldier = Baddy South Korean Rich Girl + North Korean Soldier Bingo? Controversy Crash Landing On You might’ve won legions of fans around the globe, but its success didn’t come without controversy. After the drama’s premiere, Crash Landing On You was accused of “glamorising” the reclusive state. And that’s not all. Police Report Made for the Drama On 9 Jan, the conservative Christian Liberty Party from South Korea, lest you’re wondering filed a police complaint under the premise that the drama had violated National Security Law. It claims that the drama has only depicted North Korean soldiers in a “peaceful” way, and that South Korean citizens have been “incited” by the TV series. “Our security law stipulates we should not sympathize with an anti-government organization that threatens the nation’s existence,” the statement reads. “We want the instigators to be promptly investigated and punished.” Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency is currently reviewing the complaint, but many believe that the cable channel is unlikely to be punished. “Fiction-based dramas have rarely been punished for breaking the security law,” a police agency official said. Yah, why so serious? Conclusion It’s Worth a Watch If you’re one who’s still on the fence on whether you should spend some time on this drama, here’s our gentle advice If you don’t want to laugh and cry loudly, then don’t watch it. If not, Netflix’s just about $12 per month. More From Decider Skip to main content When I was growing up, my mother would wistfully tell me about how in the year before I was born, a mini-series called The Thorn Birds captured everyone in America’s imagination like nothing before. The mini-series told the story of a forbidden love between a handsome priest and a spirited Kiwi girl named Meghann whom I was most likely named after, no matter what my mom says. I was often jealous of my mom for getting to be swept away in real-time by a melodramatic forbidden romance, but no more. That’s because I’ve become addicted to a Korean miniseries on Netflix called Crash Landing on You, which elicits swoons, squees, and screams from me like no other show I’ve ever seen before. The series tells the story of the only more forbidden love than that between priest and parishioner a romance between a South Korean heiress and a North Korean officer. Crash Landing on You is an epic romance full of wit, heart, and danger, and it’s captured the imagination of my friends in the same way my mom’s generation obsessed over The Thorn Birds back in the day. Crash Landing on You originally debuted in late 2019 — which means, yes, I am very late to it — but continues to be one of the best escapist binge-watches on Netflix. The series follows the glamorous Yoon Se-ri Son Ye-jin, the daughter of a major Korean business clan and a self-made beauty industry titan. Se-ri has been on the outs with her cutthroat family for years, but after her father is released from jail for committing a white collar crime, she is coaxed back to the family manse for dinner. Her father shocks everyone by declaring the smart and successful Se-ri as his heir, and not either of her older brothers. For her “victory lap,” Se-ri decides to test a new paragliding suit for her company herself. The only problem? A wacky storm strikes blowing Yoon Se-ri over the DMZ and straight into the arms of a handsome North Korean officer, Captain Ri Jeong-Hyeok Hyun Bin. Photo Everett Collection Captain Ri Jeong-Hyeok is as far from a North Korean boogeyman as you can imagine. Rather than hurt or report Yoon Se-ri, the outrageously beautiful Captain Ri reluctantly accepts it as his mission to protect and hide the haughty Southerner. Jeong-Hyeok isn’t just a border captain, but the son of a high-ranking North Korean official, gifting him some measure of immunity within his harsh, totalitarian society. He’s also a frustrated piano prodigy who briefly escaped the yoke of North Korean culture to study in Switzerland which is a whole other bizarre and romantic angle to the show’s already impossible dream of a concept. Sensitive, loyal, and imbued with the kind of superhuman fighting ability of an Avenger, Captain Ri Jeong-Hyeok is the ideal protector for a woman like Se-ri. Naturally, the two begrudgingly forge first a friendship and then a flirtation and then they fall in love. Of course, there are roadblocks to their romance, starting with the fact that their nations are at war and ending with the reality that Jeong-Hyeok is already engaged to a beautiful North Korean department store heiress. There’s a subplot involving a corrupt North Korean officer responsible for the murder of Jeong-Hyeok’s noble older brother, a South Korean swindler who winds up in said villain’s care after ripping off Se-ri’s brother, and a whole mess of small town gossip. Crash Landing on You plays with all these elements and serves up an engrossing tale of star-crossed lovers who are constantly as tested by their conflicting feelings as much as they are by the larger geo-political conflict directing their lives. You don’t need subtitles to understand each and every spark of attraction that flickers across their faces. As they fall harder for each other, the show’s pull on your heart only gets stronger, until you find yourself squealing at the most melodramatic needle drops and impossible coincidences. How good is Son and Hyun’s chemistry? Well, the two recently made international headlines confirming they fell in love in real life and are still going strong. Crash Landing on You is a show unlike anything you’ve ever seen. It has insane action sequences, glorious montages of wealth porn, unblinking looks at the impoverished lives of everyday North Koreans, and one of the most heart-wrenching love stories in ages. With 16 90-minute-long episodes, it’s truly a feast to be savored and the perfect antidote to the winter quarantine blues. Maybe it’s not entirely precise to compare Crash Landing on You to 1983’s The Thorn Birds, but the Korean show is the first mini-series that’s gotten me to wistfully stare off into the distance of my one-bedroom apartment and sigh about two star-crossed lovers. Netflix has given viewers here in the States a good view of what Korean romantic dramedies are all about two mismatched leads, lots of complications, usually a situation where one or both leads have to hide their identities. It’s almost like a telenovela, with as many twists and turns. Crash Landing On You ups the ante by also commenting on life on both sides of the 38th parallel. The Gist Yoon Se-ri Son Ye-jin has spent the past decade building a very successful fashion company, and she has a flair for the dramatic. When paparazzi catch her holding hands with a pop star, her only concern is that the earrings she’s wearing aren’t blurred out on the photos. Though Se-ri has been estranged from her family, who runs one of South Korea’s biggest conglomerates, her father Jeung-pyeong Nam Kyung-eup orders that she come home to see him after he’s released on probation from prison on securities fraud charges. Despite the fact that her brothers Se-joon Choi Dae-hoon and Se-hyung Park Hyung-soo are still involved in the country and have been aiming to succeed their father as chairman for years, Jeung-pyeong decides that Se-ri will take over for him, because she actually runs a successful business. Of course, everyone, including her mother Jeong-yeon Bang Eun-jin, is shocked, when Se-ri accepts. But first she has a very important sportswear test to perform. The next day, she goes to a mountainous area to test a jumpsuit her company designed; she wants to go paragliding, much to the dismay of her manager, Hong Chang-sik Go Kyu-pil. She goes out and is enjoying the peace when she gets caught up in a sudden tornado and is deposited, mostly unharmed, in a tree. On the North Korean side of the DMZ, Captain Ri Jung-hyuk Hyun Bin is leading a patrol unit about to switch out of the intense deployment at the DMZ. He’s loyal but has integrity, which he shows when the South catches people from the North who crossed to plunder artifacts. He is appalled when Armed Forces Security Bureau officer Jo Cheol-kang Oh Man-seok tells him that the three will get off lightly they don’t. As he patrols the fence to search for tornado damage, he spots Se-ri caught in that tree. He orders her to jump down, and she literally lands on him. At first Se-ri thinks Jung-hyuk is a defector, but then she realizes that she somehow landed in North Korea. She goes to run, but he warns her that the woods are full of scattered mines, right before he steps on one himself. As he’s frozen in place, she runs and he lets her; she somehow evades his patrol, the border guard, and all the mines, and jumps a fence she thinks will lead her home. When she goes into the first town she sees, she realizes she’s even deeper into the North than she realized; Captain Ri follows her there and finds her. Photo Netflix Our Take One of the things we noticed with Korean romance dramedies is that it usually involves a situation where two unexpected people fall for each other, or where one of the romantic leads is thrust into an unfamiliar situation where he or she has to hide, impersonate someone else, or otherwise conceal their true identity. Crash Landing On You Original title Sarangui Bulsichak is in the “hiding” category, where Captain Ri is going to hide Se-ri in that North Korean town so she’s not found out and sent to prison. Of course they’ll probably fall in love and there will be all sorts of complications. But the most interesting complicating factor is how a woman who was about to ascend to a powerful position in the business world of South Korea will have to abide by how people — women in particular — live in North Korea, which is more akin to the 1950s than the 2020s. So, in the middle of this romantic comedy there will be some sociopolitical themes that we don’t tend to see in shows like this. Will Se-ri prompt Captain Ri to defect and join her in Seoul? And, considering that her family has issues that are reminiscent of the Roys in Succession, how will her reappearance shake things up? And there are things going on with her family, like Se-hyung trying to get restitution from a young businessman named Goo Seung-joon Kim Jung-hyun, who ripped him off. Se-joon’s issue is that his wife Do Hye-ji Hwang Woo-seul-hye is putting all her hopes on the idea that Se-joon will be the chairman. Those aspects of the story are touched upon in the 76-minute first episode, and they’ll likely be explored more as the season goes on two episodes premiere each week, on Fridays and Saturdays. But for now, those stories are underdeveloped in the face of having to cover Captain Ri and Se-ri’s stories. But there’s potential there for those stories to get better. Sex and Skin Nothing. Sleeper Star From what we’ve read, most of the North Korea scenes were shot in Mongolia, and that scenery is beautiful backdrop to this story. Most Pilot-y Line As you’d expect, there are a lot of elements to a show like this that are more fantasy than reality, and Se-ri running through multiple minefields without setting off any of them is a big example of tht.
